Maria, Maria

Mary, Mary

This is one of the most successful works that partners Milton Nascimento and Fernando Brant have created. The song was released in 1978 and was immortalized in the voice of other great names such as Elis Regina, and Roupa Nova.

The composition has a popular Brazilian name in the title and, in this way, pays a beautiful tribute to women, having become a kind of “anthem” capable of portraying the strength and reality of work, difficulty, dream and faith of Brazilian women.

According to Milton Nascimento, the lyrics were inspired by a real character that Fernando Brant knew, and who lived by the railroad, in Minas Gerais, having to raise her children alone. Also, according to the composer, the character can be seen as a kind of example in the soul of each one of us.
